Since 1st of September 2011, Panaque Srl. and Costa Edutainment Spa have teamed up to manage Aquarium of Cala Gonone, Dorgali (NU).

The new management has the objective of promoting the Aquarium, with its privileged geographical position on the beautiful Gulf of Orosei, as a reference point among the scientific and cultural structures of Sardinia, exploiting the know- how developed during time by the two companies in their respective sectors. In the new management, Panaque is responsible for managing the aquariological sector, technical, ticketing and assistance to the public; Costa Edutainment is in charge of the communication and the marketing with the aim of integrating the Aquarium of Cala Gonone in the broader system already managed by this company throughout the country, with particular reference to the cultural and tourist attractions of Genoa.

The idea of this Aquarium was born in the 90s with a first draft project of smaller dimensions by the American architect Peter Chermayeff and it is realized with the second design, by the Sardinian architect Sebastiano Gaias. Opened to the public in July 10, 2010, the Aquarium of Cala Gonone has 24 tanks that allow the public diving into the Mediterranean Sea, starting from the shore to get to deeper waters with special attention to marine ecosystems of Sardinia. The visit takes the visitor on a brief dip even into the tropical waters and to a direct contact with the animals through a touch tank.

The mission of the structure is related to environmental education and awareness of the public in general, with special attention to develop educational programs for the schools. Thanks to its privileged location, the Aquarium lends itself to develop over time projects to enhance the natural heritage of the whole area, in cooperation with the public administration and integrated with the offer of tour operators in the area.

The Aquarium of Cala Gonone has chosen, since its origin, an approach devoted to environmental protection and to reducing the impact on the environment, and it is for this reason that the staff Panaque pledged to promote some major topics such as: the population “kilometers zero”, the use of recycled materials and the reduced consumption. The wealth of marine species in the Gulf of Orosei and the excellent relationship with the local fishermen, allowed to populate the Aquarium with animals collected in the waters off the seaside of the Marina of Cala Gonone, contributing effectively to promote a real Aquarium at “kilometers zero”. The latest generation of the systems, well-designed and executed, let reduce the consumption, thus reducing the production of CO2, while the filtration systems are using environmentally friendly material, such as glass recycling. These entire efforts make the Aquarium of Cala Gonone a structure naturally dedicated to the environmental awareness and characteristic in its own way.
